Why am I getting this request?
You have been contacted because your customer is an EU based company which is required to submit quarterly CBAM reports containing information about the carbon emissions of the products purchased from you.
In order to help you prepare the required information and better understand the topic, please read the help articles on this page or watch our step-by-step instructions.
What is CBAM?
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a tool of the European Union to establish a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon intensive goods that are entering the EU, and to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries.
Essentially CBAM requires EU companies to gather and report carbon emission data on these imported goods from the manufacturers (and later on buy emission certificates for the imported emissions).
Currently CBAM only applies to a certain group of goods. You can read more on CBAM goods here.
Who is affected by CBAM?
CBAM affects both the (importing) EU based companies, as well as the (producing) non-EU based companies if CBAM relevant goods are imported into the EU.
While the EU based company has to provide a quarterly report on the affected CBAM goods to the European Commission, the producing company has to provide the relevant emission data (primary data) for these products.
As of 2026 the producing company will also need to verify the data collection methodology and provide a yearly report to the EU directly.
What does this mean for you?
Basically you will now need to follow 3 steps, which we will also guide you through with our help articles:
- You need to track the emissions when producing CBAM goods in line with the EU-defined measurement methodology (CBAM data communication template)
- If you use purchased precursors, you need to contact your suppliers to receive emission data
- You need to deliver emission data to your customers
